🚹 Help! I Haven’t Pooped in 5 Days… What Can I Do Right Now?

Poop Talk | 0 comments

Let’s be real: if you’re Googling this, you’re in the danger zone. Five days without a bowel movement is no joke and whether you’re feeling backed up, bloated, or like you’re about to cry on the toilet, I promise you’re not alone.

Here’s what to do right now to get things moving, plus what actually worked for me when I was stuck (literally) in this same spot.

đŸ’„ First: Don’t Panic, But Let’s Get Serious

Your gut’s sending up a flare. When it’s been 4, 5, or more days without a bowel movement, things are usually dry, slow, and getting harder by the hour.

Let’s go into Emergency Poop Mode.

đŸ„€ Step 1: Hydrate Like You Mean It

Constipation is often made worse by dehydration. Right now, go drink two big glasses of water. Not sips. Not a dainty little tea. WATER. Add a pinch of sea salt if you can, it helps with absorption.

Extra credit: warm lemon water, coconut water, or a hydration mix with electrolytes.

🧂 Step 2: Use the Magnesium Trick

One of the fastest (and safest) ways to get relief is magnesium citrate. It pulls water into the bowels and gets things going in a few hours.

âžĄïž I use this one every time I’m desperate:

Take it with a full glass of water and stay near a bathroom. It usually works within 3–6 hours.

đŸšœ Step 3: Fix Your Toilet Posture

Yes, your poop posture matters a LOT. When you’re sitting with your knees at 90 degrees, your colon is kinked. It’s like trying to push toothpaste through a bent tube.

💡 Use a Squatty Potty or stack up a few books under your feet.
This changes your angle and makes it easier to go, especially when it’s been days.

🍑 Step 4: Try the Belly Massage

Gently massage your abdomen in a clockwise motion, starting from your lower right belly (where the colon begins) and moving up, across, and down.

It stimulates movement in the colon and can actually help gas and stool move along.

Add a heating pad if you’re feeling crampy.

☕ Step 5: Coffee + Movement Combo

If you’re not sensitive to caffeine, drink a cup of coffee and go for a 10–15 minute walk.

Coffee can stimulate peristalsis (fancy word for “the colon doing its thing”). Walking helps the muscles of your digestive tract wake up too.
